Summary

From the number-one bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes a powerful American epic about love and heroism and hope, set during the Great Depression, a time when the country was in crisis and at war with itself, when millions were out of work and even the land seemed to have turned against them。

My land tells its story if you listen。 The story of our family 。”

Texas, 1921。 A time of abundance。 The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era。 But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak。 Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life。 With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows。

By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains。 Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail and water dries up and the earth cracks open。 Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains。 Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive。

In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa—like so many of her neighbors—must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family。

The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it—the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots。 A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation。

Harrowing and heartbreaking but worth the read。

FABULOUS!!!!! I’ve never read or remembered the horrible dust storms in the Great Plains。 During the Great Depression in the ‘20’s and ‘30’s many Americans migrated to CA looking for a better life then trying to farm the dead fields。 The cruelty they endured by land owners in CA to work for them for barely enough money to live on was unbelievable and unAmerican。 The poverty, loss of life, horrible living conditions with little to no food was hard to read and still exists today in America, the gr FABULOUS!!!!! What a struggle and what a story about hard working Americans facing incredible hardships。 All worth it at the end。 What an ending。 Your mother is always with you。 Good read。

I was a little disappointed with this book。 I’ve heard so many good reviews on it。 So I was waiting for it to get great。 Sadly, it never came。 I did enjoy the history lesson。 I never knew about the dust bowl。 The storyline was very heartbreaking and at times endearing。 I did not care for the sad ending and wish Elsa had gotten her happy ending。 I think this is why I rated the book lower。

Oh Elsa Martinelli, you will always live in my heart and my memories as the most amazing, lovable, beautiful character I've read in 40 years of life。 The growth, the strenght, the bravery! This book is a masterpiece in character development and growth that every writer should read。 Both Elsa and Lareda, it was like watching flowers blooming。 And it was a wonder to behold。This book is also a masterpiece in world building, creating the right atmosphere and dread。 At some points I felt my mouth parc Oh Elsa Martinelli, you will always live in my heart and my memories as the most amazing, lovable, beautiful character I've read in 40 years of life。 The growth, the strenght, the bravery! This book is a masterpiece in character development and growth that every writer should read。 Both Elsa and Lareda, it was like watching flowers blooming。 And it was a wonder to behold。This book is also a masterpiece in world building, creating the right atmosphere and dread。 At some points I felt my mouth parched, I felt like coughing and even an itch in my eyes。 That's how real it all felt。Last but not least, the feelings。 This book was such a roller-coaster。 There was happiness, there were moments of joy, kindness, hope and there was such fear, despair, hopelessness, sadness, anger。。。 And I felt it all so deeply! All of it masterfully written。 Listening to this audiobook made me cry over the Easter lunch I was cooking。 That epilogue was everything! The sorrow and the hope。。。 Masterful! All in all to say, one of the best books I've ever read。 。。。more

Gosh, this was hard to read。 I love the way that Kristin Hannah does historical fiction。 I love that so many of her stories are about mothers and daughters。

I’m struggling with describing my feelings of this book, simply because I don’t want to give anything away。 Let me say, I wasn’t ready。 The ending wasn’t what I expected and I gave some choice words about it。 Not because it wasn’t fantastic, because it absolutely was but I was just wanting different, I was completely shocked, and found myself saying out loud “what?!” I highly recommend this book!!

I cannot say enough great things about this book。 I ugly cried alone in my car listening to audible。 If you like historical fiction and you understand what a mother will do for her children, this is a must read。 One of the best books I’ve ever read。

I may try picking this one up at a later time。 The animals suffering , the people suffering , every bad thing happening to a person , it's depressing and I haven't found a good reason to suffer through it myself。 I may try picking this one up at a later time。 The animals suffering , the people suffering , every bad thing happening to a person , it's depressing and I haven't found a good reason to suffer through it myself。 。。。more

I wish I could give this book 10 stars, 5 is not enough。 I’ve learned so much about the depression and America and how we treat people that are different than us。 What it means to be brave in a world that needs change。 So good!

Im so glad I picked this book up and gave it a second chance! I was a few chapters into it when I couldn’t put it down。 Elsa struggles to survive the rejection from her family, the dust bowl, and trying to provide for her children。 Elsa’s rebellious teenage daughter pushes her to be brave just as her late grandfather had。

An epic novel。 Hannah weaves an engaging and heartfelt tale set during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression。 She captured the essence of those trying to survive and those with hope。 This book will stay with me a long time and is surely a must read for anyone interested in the time period。

I didn’t realize how hard life was during the great depression until reading this。 Each day was a battle that you barely made it through。 The strength of each of the characters is astounding and I can see a little bit of myself in each of them。 The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars was because the first half of the book felt a little slow…although it may have been written that way for a reason because that’s really how each day would’ve been。 This book was a good reminder to be brave and s I didn’t realize how hard life was during the great depression until reading this。 Each day was a battle that you barely made it through。 The strength of each of the characters is astounding and I can see a little bit of myself in each of them。 The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars was because the first half of the book felt a little slow…although it may have been written that way for a reason because that’s really how each day would’ve been。 This book was a good reminder to be brave and stand up for your family and what you believe in, even when it’s scary and hard。 。。。more

Great historical novel, although fictitious but based on historical fact。 Never knew how bad the Depression, drought and dust affected so many people in America and that there was such a mass exodus to California in the 30's。。 Definitely interested in learning more about the time period。 Great historical novel, although fictitious but based on historical fact。 Never knew how bad the Depression, drought and dust affected so many people in America and that there was such a mass exodus to California in the 30's。。 Definitely interested in learning more about the time period。 。。。more

Kristin Hannah is a hit and miss author for me。 Some of her books are 5 star reads while others are DNF or 1 star。 I have been wanting to read this one since it was first published and I was just waiting for it to be released in paperback。The Four Winds did not disappoint。 I was sucked into Elsa’s world from the very first page。 I felt her sadness and her longing。 I felt her heartache turn after turn。 And it was beautiful watching Ledora grow up and turn into a young woman。 I read this 400+ page Kristin Hannah is a hit and miss author for me。 Some of her books are 5 star reads while others are DNF or 1 star。 I have been wanting to read this one since it was first published and I was just waiting for it to be released in paperback。The Four Winds did not disappoint。 I was sucked into Elsa’s world from the very first page。 I felt her sadness and her longing。 I felt her heartache turn after turn。 And it was beautiful watching Ledora grow up and turn into a young woman。 I read this 400+ page tome in 3 sittings。 The only thing that makes me sad is that it’s over。 Definitely a favorite。 。。。more
